Diesel Fuel Increases & Tax Decreases?

Viesti Kirjoittaja TurboMac »

Is the cost of diesel tax coming down next year? Is the tax system changing to one similar to UK, where it is based on the size of egnine/emissions? Are the latest rediculous diesel fuel price increases, so that they can counter the effect of next years tax reductions? (as the price of petrol doesn't seemed to have gone up as much)

Sorry about all the questions. I've heard a few bits & pieces about the new rules for next year and the possible reductions in tax, but my Finnish is still not good enough to understand complicated things. So if someone could briefly explain in English (*) about the new diesel tax laws, that would be most appreciated.

I love my little Nova (Corsa 'A') 1.5TD and it has always been very ecomomical & cheap to run, until I came to Finland anyway. The only good thing was that diesel fuel was so much cheaper here than it was in England. But now that is going up too...!! :evil

* Please don't be shy to reply in English, but if you want say some things in Finnish I will try to understand / translate.

From what I've understood, the diesel tax (meaning the ~500 eur/year you donate to the government from the fun of owning a diesel car) is going nowhere in the near future. The government did only lower the taxes of new cars, but no changes were made to the diesel tax yet. At the moment we are only left with hope that someday that will happen, but right now it's only speculation as no decisions have been made.

What comes to the price of diesel itself, it's not really related to the new tax. You can confirm it by yourself here, the price of diesel has gone up across the Atlantic too. I just learned that it's common for this time of year that the prices go up as more "diesel" is used for heating.

Well I don't know if it's that common really. Atleast that didn't happen last year...for some reason. As you can see from this graph (pink line is for diesel and dark blue is for 95E):

The fuel-tax of diesel has been / will be raised relatively more than benzine's. So if they won't remove the crazy-ass diesel-tax (I don't believe they will...), it won't be that cheap to drive a diesel...or then you just have to drive it alot. Propably in a couple of years diesel will be actually more expensive than benzine. That's because people are buying diesel cars more and more every year, and as the demand raises, so will the price.

But in the other hand, they told they would completely remove fuel-tax from biodiesel...we'll see...

Just had a quick look at some UK websites and the price of diesel has gone up there too. Its now gone through the dreaded Pound barrier, at an average of £1.06 per litre  And some petrol stations are even charging upto £1.19 per litre :o
The UK has the fourth highest unleaded price in Europe and the highest diesel price

I think that diesel taxes corresponding to car weight will remain similar, but the "käyttömaksu" i.e using fee will decrease/increase in according to carbon dioxide amounts. The käyttömaksu is nowadays 127 e but will change starting 2010 for vehicles made 2001 and after.
The 2010 is for updating computers in national vehicle register center.
