Stock factory distributors do not reach full advance until 4,000 rpm or more. Generally speaking, this is to help protect the engine while under warranty under all conditions, including high altitude and high heat. Too quick of a spark advance "curve" with low octane fuel and a "Joe Average" driver could cause cylinder detonation. So, the factory limits the spark rate just to the point where performance is acceptable. But for the serious car enthusiast who likes all the performance possible along with maximum steady-state fuel economy too, a blueprinted, high performance ignition is a "must".
This timing advance kit will modify one of your stock ECM (Electronic Control Module) sensors. This mod tells your ECM that the air coming in through the intake is cold air. This advances the timing, letting the engine produce more power. This mod is a fraction of the cost of those expensive ECU upgrades or cold air induction units, and does the exact same thing - adds from 15 to 20 HP!
This modification has been performed on the 1992 Celica pictured here, which has gained about an extra 15 horsepower. The difference was noticable right away. It will work on any vehicle that has an electronic control module, usually 1990+
Is this safe?
The end result is that your car thinks the air entering is colder than it really is. Your ECU advances the timing of your engine to compensate for the richer fuel mix created. This advance in timing allows your car to produce more power. The situation is no different than if the air coming in was really cold. Cold Air Induction Units cost hundreds of dollars and do exactly the same thing. An ECU upgrade costs hundreds, and does exactly the same thing.
Will This Void My Warranty?
NO this will not void out most warranties. If you have a very strict underwriter on your warranty you can undo this mod in less than 5 minutes. You can even re-install later. This leaves no trace of any modification.
Will This Hurt My Car, Motor, Computer, etc?
NO this will not hurt your car or have any negative effect on your motor or computer whatsoever. In fact this mod will actually work WITH your car the way it is designed. The only Exception is that you will use a little more fuel than before but it's definitely worth it!
