Heinz-Harald Frentzen confirmed on Friday that he had quit Formula One and would be moving to the DTM touring car series next year. Frentzen also revealed that he had already signed a deal with Opel to drive for them in the German series.
The German has opted to call it quits on his F1 career after failing to find a drive for the 2004 season. Frentzen, a three-time grand prix winner, was without a seat after being released by Sauber at the end of this year.
However, he is now looking forward to a new challenge with Opel in the DTM series. Opel are one of the frontrunners of the series, which is very popular in Frentzen’s home country, Germany.
"I must get used to having a roof over my head but it was important for me to have four wheels under my bottom again," the 36-year-old said. "I considered it all very carefully. I don't think DTM has anything to envy to Formula One and I don't feel sad at all. I'm looking forward to exciting races."
Opel Chief Executive Officer Carl-Peter Forster added: "Heinz-Harald Frentzen is a true fighter and a highly popular racer who is an excellent match for the Opel brand. He has never given up, even when the going got tough, and that's what makes him so special."
